Wide Plank Hardwood Flooring
Wide plank hardwood floors have become very popular in the last 5 years. The wider, and longer, planks results in less seams and a grand streamlined look. Less seams also makes them easier to clean!
Wide plank floors create a great impact, can make a smaller room seem larger as well as enhance a large open room. If you have large scale furniture or large windows wide planks are a great compliment.
Wide planks come in a variety of species such as Maple, Hickory, Red Oak, Walnut, Ash and Birch but the most popular today is White Oak flooring.
What You Should Know About Wide Plank Flooring
There are a few things you should know when buying Wide Plank Flooring in Edmonton and area:
- Engineered: Wide plank floors sold in Alberta must be an engineered hardwood. Solid hardwood in a wide plank would gap in our dry winters and then squeak. For best results in our climate we recommend an engineered wide plank floor with a Sawn heavy wear layer such as 3 or 4mm.
- Widths: The most common width Touchwood Flooring sells is 5 inches, followed closely by 7 inches and 4 3/8 inches. We can source wider planks up to 10 inches however we don’t typically recommend for best results.
- Types of Styles or Finishes: Urethane or Oiled finishes are available and color choices are endless. Wide plank floors can also come fumed or smoked and with or without a texture; currently white oak floors are popular with a slight texture whether that be wire brushed, hand scraped or the new “saw cut”.
- Installation: Touchwood Flooring recommends either a nail with a glue assist or a traditional full glue down when installing wide plank flooring.
